A new wave of Artificial Intelligence (AI) skincare has arrived.

Smartskin Africa introduced by Accessplus Communications Ltd is built to understand the unique characteristics of African skin. The innovation delivers personalized skincare routines, deeper skin insights, and data-driven guidance for users in Ghana.

At the official launch on Friday, November 14, 2025, CEO of Accessplus Communications Ltd, Kevin Boateng, revealed that the platform is an initiative of Access Plus Communications Limited and stands as the first AI-powered skin analysis solution of its kind in Ghana.

According to Mr. Boateng, the mission behind SmartSkin is to help people better understand and improve their skin using technology specifically engineered for African realities and skin health.

“Most people do not know their skin. Most people do not know the type of skin they have, and most people do not understand the unique characteristics of their skin, which makes a lot of people just follow the masses,” he said.

He explained that many people select skincare products based on hearsay or TV adverts, rather than informed decisions, leading to guesswork. He added that factors such as dehydration, stress, weather, and time all influence the quality of one’s skin making proper analysis essential.

“When you ask people what pomade they use, they often mention products they saw on TV or ones recommended by others. There is a lot of guesswork involved, and many people are not truly engaged with their skin health. Your skin changes and evolves over time, and its quality is influenced by factors such as dehydration, weather, and stress. That is why this platform was engineered using AI technology,” he remarked.

Mr. Boateng noted that the platform is built with advanced technology backed by extensive research.

“You take a selfie; it scans and analyses your facial skin. Based on 15 parameters, it recommends products and generates a report. For areas that require concern, specific products are suggested,” he explained.

He highlighted that the SmartSkin team includes computer engineers, dermatologists from across the world, and experts who have trained the AI using a large dataset.

“Our AI is well informed when it comes to African skin,” he stressed.

Mr. Boateng emphasized that the platform is uniquely designed for African skin tones and variations.

“What makes our platform different from others that exist is that ours was engineered specifically for African skin not only dark skin, but every shade that exists within our spectrum,” he highlited.

However, he clarified that SmartSkin is not intended for people with severe skin conditions, advising such individuals to seek professional medical care.

“Our platform is meant for beauty lovers who seek to improve the quality of their skin,” he noted.

He explained that lighting, makeup, and sweat can affect scan results, recommending that users perform their scans first thing in the morning, right after a shower.

Mr. Boateng also clarified that SmartSkin does not manufacture its own skincare products.

“We provide the technology platform to carry out your scan, analyse your image, and generate a report. The products recommended are generated by the AI, and users are then directed to SmartSkin’s partner shops to purchase them,” he noted.
