Education Minister to school heads: ‘Do not prevent any child from accessing education’

A former Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, has asserted that the future of the flagship Free SHS policy is under threat under the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

Mr. Tandoh believes the likelihood of the policy being scrapped or weakened by the incumbent government is high, forcing the country to revert to second-cycle schools paying school fees.

Speaking in a monitored interview on Asaase Radio, Wednesday, December 3, 2025, Mr. Tandoh projected that parents may soon be asked to pay school fees.

“NDC will soon ask parents to pay fees. If you can’t, your child stays home,” he stated, stressing his assertion.

According to Mr. Tandoh, his statement is linked to the NDC’s campaign messages during the 2024 general election, where they pronounced that the Free SHS policy, introduced by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is not feasible.

He said such comments justify and put the NDC’s commitment to safeguarding the policy under question, thereby serving as a clear indication of his argument.

He also attributed the declining support for the policy to the removal of key grant interventions that previously supported teachers and schools, stating that the NDC’s approach reveals a lack of interest in sustaining the Free SHS policy.
