Former Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan has expressed hope that the senior national team, the Black Stars, will progress from their group at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside European powerhouses England and Croatia, with North American side Panama completing the group.
He described the group as “tricky,” considering the strength of the English and Croats.
However, he expressed optimism about sailing through to the knockout phase.
“Well, I think it’s a very tricky group right now and all the four teams would want to qualify, and definitely, everybody back home wants Ghana to qualify, so we will do our possible best to qualify to the next stage. We are optimistic,” said the former Black Stars captain.
Gyan made these remarks in Washington, D.C., United States, after the official draw for the tournament was held on Friday, December 5, 2025.
Ghana will begin their campaign on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, against Panama, before facing England a week later on Tuesday, June 23.
Four days after that, on Saturday, June 27, the Black Stars will wrap up their group matches with a clash against 2022 World Cup bronze medalists Croatia.
