The late Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi, is being laid to rest today, Saturday , December 6, 2025, in his hometown of Akyem-Wenchi in the Eastern Region.
His burial follows a solemn funeral ceremony that has drawn mourners from across the country.
The funeral rites, which began on Friday, December 5, has attracted family, friends, political leaders, and constituents, all paying their final respects.
Mr. Kumi’s remains were airlifted by helicopter to Akyem-Wenchi earlier on Friday.
The deceased passed away on July 7, 2025, and left behind a widow.
Mr. Kumi entered Parliament on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and had a short but turbulent political career until his demise.
His election in 2024 was marred by legal disputes over the legitimacy of the Akwatia parliamentary seat.
In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court convicted him of contempt after he defied an injunction preventing him from being sworn in. A bench warrant was later issued for his arrest.
Few weeks before his death, however, the Supreme Court overturned the conviction, clearing him of contempt charges and restoring his political standing.
