A Deputy National Field Director of the United Party (UP), Afia Korankyewaa, has underscored the dangers of extending presidential terms beyond Ghana’s established two-term mandate.

She warned that such a move could frustrate the peace and stability of the country.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Thursday, December 11, 2025, she cautioned that the idea is dangerous and could undermine democratic progress if not properly addressed.

She noted that extending a presidential term to three or more could bring negative consequences, citing political instability and recent coup threats in neighbouring countries such as Benin and Guinea.

According to Korankyewaa, Ghana is already struggling with governance and leadership challenges, and any attempt to extend presidential terms could worsen the situation.

She further argued that some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) pushed the third-term debate out of fear, claiming it is a trap aimed at discouraging the current leadership of President Mahama.

Korankyewaa pointed to recent comments by the Member of Parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyire, Hon. Frank Annoh-Dompreh, as evidence of internal political tension.

Ms. Korankyewaa urged the ruling government to remain focused on fulfilling its promises to Ghanaians instead of entertaining talk of a third-term bid.

In her closing remarks, she called on Ghanaians to begin considering credible leadership alternatives, stating that “It’s high time Ghanaians think about a credible third party and the appropriate man is Mr. Alan Kyeremateng, the Flagbearer for UP.”
