A viral social media post has sparked a heated debate about cultural appreciation and African unity after some Zambian netizens reacted with amusement, to President John Dramani Mahama’s traditional attire.when.he.arrived in Lusaka on Wednesday, February 3, 2026.

The President was spotted wearing the iconic fugu, a traditional Northern smock, which drew laughter from some online users.

However, some prominent Ghanaian personalities have condemned the reaction of some Zambian netizens to President John Dramani Mahama’s wearing of the traditional fugu, a Northern smock, during his visit to Lusaka.

Ghanaian Journalist and politician, Ras Mubarak, described the mockery and laughter as a “colonial hangover” and urged Africans to educate themselves about each other’s cultures.

“When we don’t even recognize our own brother’s traditional drip, how are we supposed to build the unity we keep preaching about?” he asked.

Former British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) presenter Ben Dotsei Malor questioned why some Zambians failed to recognize and celebrate the authentic African traditional values attached to the fugu, citing pan-Africanist Zambians like Maureen Nkandu and Chibaula D. Silwamba as examples of those who embody the spirit of African unity.

Special Aide to the Chief of Staff at the Presidency of Ghana, Benjamin Essuman also weighed in, saying it’s amusing that Zambians are still “steep deep in colonial indoctrination” that wearing an African wear like fugu is odd, unfashionable, and unpresidential.
