The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly has announced an immediate two-month suspension of all burials at the Osu Cemetery, following reports of illegal and unethical practices at the site.

The decision was made public by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Alfred Allotey Gaisie, during a press conference on Thursday. The move comes after verified complaints of unauthorised grave excavations, desecration of human remains, and the illegal sale of burial plots.

“We have taken note of disturbing reports concerning illegal and unethical activities, including the unauthorised sale of burial plots and desecration of graves. All burials at Osu Cemetery are suspended for the next two months,” Mr. Gaisie stated.

The temporary halt will allow the Assembly to audit burial permits, verify documentation, and identify management gaps. The MCE explained that the review process will help prevent future abuses, ensure accountability, and safeguard both families and cemetery infrastructure.

“This process will help track families, prevent future abuses, and address security and financial concerns. It is necessary for the proper assessment, audit, and restructuring of cemetery management,” he added.

Mr. Gaisie strongly condemned the reported acts, describing them as criminal and offensive to Ghanaian cultural values and respect for the deceased.

“The Assembly condemns these acts in the strongest terms. Such conduct is criminal and deeply disrespectful to our cultural and moral standards,” he said.

In addition to the suspension, extra security personnel will be deployed to monitor the cemetery and prevent further unauthorised activities. The Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit has also been directed to sanitise and secure the cemetery, ensuring the dignity of those laid to rest.

“These measures aim to prevent further illegal access, desecration of graves, and unauthorised activities within the cemetery,” Mr. Gaisie noted.

While the suspension applies to the general public, burials for indigenes of the area will be allowed under strictly controlled procedures.
