Former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called for strengthened security measures to protect Ghanaian traders operating across borders, following a deadly terrorist attack in Burkina Faso that claimed the lives of seven Ghanaians.

He believes that the incident underscores the urgent need for Ghana to deepen intelligence collaboration with neighboring countries to safeguard its citizens engaged in trade outside the country.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer’s call relates to the recent attack on Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, where seven were killed and several others sustained injuries.

In a statement of condolences to the bereaved families, Dr. Bawumia described the news as shocking and expressed sorrow over their untimely passing.

“I’ve received with shock news of some Ghanaian traders who have been killed as well as several others injured in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.

“The NPP, Samira and I express our condolences to the families of the bereaved and our best wishes to the injured.”

Dr. Bawumia admonished for enhanced security measures to protect Ghanaian traders when outside for trading.

“Ghanaian traders must not be left to such peril as they go about their trade.

I urge the government to deepen intelligence collaboration with all our neighbors to ensure Ghanaians are protected wherever they find themselves,” he said.

The former Vice President emphasized that the safety of Ghanaian traders is paramount and urged authorities to act swiftly to reinforce existing security structures to prevent further tragedies

“Our well established framework for preventing and countering violent extremism and terrorism should be strengthened.”
