Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, has disclosed that the Komenda sugar factory has been disconnected from the national grid by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and had its water supply cut off by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) over unpaid utility bills.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, she explained that although the factory has the potential to contribute significantly to national development, persistent technical and operational challenges have prevented it from running at full capacity

“Technical and operational deficiencies have prevented the factory from running at full capacity. The machinery and equipment of the factory have not been refurbished since it construction in 2016.

“Equipment generators and motors need maintenance to bring the factory back to life,” she revealed.

Speaking on the poor state of the factory, Mrs. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare noted that it carried heavy debt, and operations have consistently been hampered by shortage of raw materials resulting to unclear procurement channels.

“The farming communities which was expected to anchor the raw materials supply remains disengaged due to lack of institutional support and unclear procurement channels,” the Minister stated.
