The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has shared an update on the ongoing efforts to seek justice for the late Nana Agyei Ahyia, the Ghanaian student who lost his life in the Republic of Latvia.

In a statement released by the Ministry on Thursday, February 19, 2026, a delegation led by the Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, have travelled to Latvia to engage Latvian authorities on the matter.

The Ministry noted that the family of the deceased (Nana Agyei’s mother and aunty) were duly represented in the meeting with Latvian authorities.

The delegation also included forensic experts, a pathologist, lawyers, ambassador and consular officers from Ghanaian Embassy in Berlin.

Deliberations were held with the following Latvian authorities: Foreign Minister, Minister for the Interior, Police Chiefs, State prosecutors and investigators on the matter

The Latvians indicated that investigations were underway and active, noting that due to the high interest of the government of Ghana, the investigations are now directly supervised by the Latvian Interior ministry with fresh investigators appointed to ensure credible outcomes.

The Latvians welcomed further submissions of any additional information relevant to the case to assist the investigative process.

According to the Ministry, the mother of the deceased guided by the delegation, submitted a formal statement to approve authorites as part of the official record for investigations.

The government of Ghana also demanded that the final investigative report be made available to Nana Agyei’s family to which there’s no objection form the Latvian side

The Ministry wishes to assure that the government of Ghana remains fully committed to truth, transparency and justice.

“We shall therefore maintain regular engagement with the authorites of Latvian and would continue to utilize all appropriate diplomatic and Legal avenues to ensure that due process is followed and justice is served,” the Ministry highlighted.
