24 hour economy is achievable, only on strong demands – Oppong Nkrumah

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has stated that the proposed 24-hour economy is achievable but must be driven by effective demand to succeed.

The 24-hour economy is one of the policies proposed by President John Dramani Mahama. It is a unified national strategy that integrates agriculture, industry, finance, education, and infrastructure into a single, transformative system.

However, speaking on TV3 on Sunday, February 22, 2026, he stressed that while the initiative is workable, it must be grounded in strong economic fundamentals.

“The 24-hour economy is doable, but it must be premised on effective demand. When you create an economic framework where there is effective demand, you don’t even need to set up an authority to tell people to work 24 hours,” he pointed out.

According to him, none of the countries that operate around the clock have established such an authority.

“We provided a list of various cities that are running a 24-hour economy; none of them set up an authority. You focus on demand,” he reiterated.

He further cited that, “GIHOC announced that they were implementing 24-hour operations, but a few moments later, the Managing Director came back to say they were going to cut back on the 24-hour shift because it did not make economic sense to run 24 hours,” he said.
