Former Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Heart of Lions midfielder Edmund Owusu-Ansah has expressed concerns about the declining standards of the Ghana Premier League (GPL), culminating in players performace.

He attributed the situation to pride and lack of discipline among current players plying their trade in the topflight league.

He believes the attitude of today’s footballers is undermining their performance and the overall quality of the league.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Owusu Ansah lamented “The standard of the Ghana Premier League is not at its best. The standard is low. It’s difficult to see teams connect up to ten passes,” he observed.

The former Kotoko star contrasted the current generation of players with his era, noting that respect and humility were key values that guided their careers.

“These current Ghana Premier League players don’t even give respect to themselves, unlike in our time. The current players all feel big, and you can’t advise them,” he stated.

Owusu Ansah emphasized that pride has become a major stumbling block for many players, who often mistake media praise for achievement rather than motivation to work harder.

“Pride is what gets these GPL players feeling they have arrived. Once a journalist starts complimenting them, they turn to believe they have arrived instead of believing hard work is what has got them there,” he opined.

The observation of the former midfielder adds to the growing voice by ex-players who once competed in the GPL and have expressed concern over the significant decline of the league.
