The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has announced that persons who will defy the upcoming National Sanitation Day Exercise will face a maximum jail term of six months.

The exercise scheduled for the first Saturday of every month will see March’s own taking place on Saturday, March 7, 2026, starting from 6:00am until the work is completed.

The exercise dubbed “Ghana@69 Clean-up” is focused on intensive cleaning activities at key areas within the Capital City and across the country.

According to the AMA, the cleaning activities will include environmental sanitation and flood prevention exercises to reaffirm the Assembly’s efforts in keeping the city clean.

It includes Agbogbloshie, the Central Business District (CBD), Tuesday Market, Chemu Naa, Kaneshie, and Circle, to ensure improved sanitation and a healthier urban environment.

In a statement dated Thursday, March 5, 2026, and signed by the Head of Public Affairs of the AMA, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, warned that failure to participate in the sanitation exercise constitutes an offence with imprisonment punishment.

“The public is reminded that failure to comply with the sanitation directive or refusal to participate in communal labour constitutes an offence, punishable on summary conviction by a fine of up to one hundred (100) penalty units or imprisonment of not less than thirty (30) days and not more than six (6) months, or both,” the statement highlighted.
