Africans must unite amid global crisis – Mahama Ayaba

The Corporate Communication Director of Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), Godwin Mahama Ayaba, has emphasized the importance of Ghana committing more resources to further expand TOR’s operations.

Speaking on the Anopa Bofoɔ show hosted by Ohemaa Sekyiwaa on Angel TV on Monday, March 9, 2026, he noted that although the refinery has undergone a major facelift under the incumbent government, it still requires additional funding.

“TOR stands at a greater chance at this time, but the fact is that we still need more investments, we still need more opportunities to be able to be sustainable.

“Another way to sustain is more investment, and also bring it up to speed with modernity, so we can change some of the existing machines because TOR was incorporated in 1963,” he stated.

Ayaba reiterated that TOR currently holds a significant advantage but stressed the critical need for further investment and opportunities to ensure sustainability.

He explained that securing additional funding for TOR’s existing interests and boosting revenue would facilitate the refinery’s expansion and help reduce import bills.

Ayaba urged stakeholders to revisit existing contracts and explore ways to channel more of their entitlements, such as royalties and interest, toward supporting the sustainability of the energy sector, particularly in light of the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.

He highlighted the potential impact of the crisis on Ghana, underscoring the necessity of increased investment to modernize TOR’s operations.

Ayaba pointed out that TOR, established in the 1960s, relies on ageing machinery that requires renovation. Increased funding would enable upgrades and alignment with contemporary practices in the oil and gas industry.

He expressed confidence that, although the Middle East crisis poses challenges, implementing these measures would mitigate its effects on the nation.
