Calls for home-based players’ inclusion in Black Stars ‘laughable’ – Vanderpuye

Former Sports Minister Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has described as ‘laughable’ campaigns for the inclusion of home-based players in the Black Stars.

He questioned the quality of these players, stating that it is impossible for them to earn a place in the national team given their current standard of play.

In an interview, the former minister emphasized the low standard of Ghana’s top-flight league, describing the players’ quality as poor.

“When I hear calls to include local players, I sometimes laugh. How is it possible? They play like Colts players. Who are these local players? The standard is poor,” he told Citi Sports.

Nii Lante Vanderpuye challenged anyone to name at least three players considered good enough to earn a starting spot in the Black Stars on any given day.

“Name three who are good enough to start,” he urged.

He cited Black Stars’ number one goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who plays for Accra Hearts of Oak, to support his argument.

“Even Benjamin Asare is a problem. He may be the best goalkeeper in the country, but he lacks many things. Against Germany, he came out twice, and both situations were disasters,” he added.
