The National Identification Authority (NIA) has dismissed recent media reports suggesting that the Ghana Card can now be used to perform financial transactions, describing such claims as “inaccurate and misleading.”

In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs Directorate, Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the NIA clarified that the Ghana Card has not been activated for financial transaction purposes and urged the public to ignore any contrary information.

“The Authority states unequivocally that the Ghana Card has not been activated for financial transaction purposes at this time,” the statement stressed, adding that “members of the public are advised to disregard any such claims and are encouraged to rely only on official communications from the National Identification Authority.”

The NIA, however, acknowledged that discussions are ongoing at the highest levels regarding the possible future integration of the Ghana Card into Ghana’s financial ecosystem. According to the Authority, these engagements involve policymakers and key institutions within the financial and regulatory sectors.

“These discussions are part of broader efforts to enhance digital identity usage and promote financial inclusion in Ghana,” the statement noted. “However, it is important to state that these deliberations remain inconclusive as of the time of this release.”

The Authority assured the public that any official decision on the use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions would be properly communicated through its verified channels.

“The NIA assures the public that any official decision, policy direction, or rollout concerning the use of the Ghana Card for financial transactions will be formally communicated through appropriate and verified channels of the Authority,” it added.

Reaffirming its mandate, the NIA emphasised its commitment to protecting the integrity and security of Ghana’s national identification system.

“The NIA remains committed to safeguarding the integrity, security, and proper use of the National Identification System,” the statement concluded.
