The Tema Region of the Electricity Company of Ghana has spent a total of GHS13,079,669 on transformer replacements for the last quarter of 2025 and the first quarter of 2026.

This information was revealed by Ing. Ankomah Emmanuel, the General Manager of that Region of the utility service provider when he met with a cross-section of media personnel at the ECG Nungua District Office.

The meeting was held on 14th April 2026 where Ing. Ankomah gave the breakdown per quarter as GHC9,379,765 which was used to replace a total of 32 transformers for the last quarter of 2025 while GHC3,699,903 was used to replace 22 transformers for the first quarter of 2026.

According to Ing. Ankomah, the reasons for these replacements are varied. One of them has to do with individuals who vandalize these transformers, rendering them useless hence needing replacements.

He went on with another reason and cited a worrying situation where “some community members decide to switch phases on their own. This causes overloads on the other phase which sometimes causes the transformer to burn”. This, he added amounts to unauthorized interference and the company can prosecute culprits when found.

A third reason he gave had to do with vehicles that run into such installations, causing them to have extensive irreparable damages, hence needing replacements.

He also thanked the various community leaders who alert ECG whenever there is an outage so that faults can be attended to on time.
