African leaders must intervene in South Africa’s xenophobic attack – Obed Opintan

Government Communication Team Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Obed Opintan, has called on African leaders and major international bodies to intervene in the alleged mistreatment of other Africans living in South Africa.

His remarks follow a viral video where fellow Africans were harassed and told to return to their own countries to fix their own problems.

Speaking on ‘Anopa Bofo’ on Thursday, April 23, 2026, he described the situation as contradictory to Africa’s long-standing vision of unity and integration and stressed that such actions undermine efforts towards building a borderless and united continent.

“What is going on in South Africa, African leaders, AU chairman, ECOWAS, and UN and all the organizations that have a say in this world must talk to South Africans because what is going on if we say we are doing same where will they be,” he said.

Mr. Opintan indicated that, based on reports he has received, even before recent incidents, safety concerns for other Africans in South Africa were already troubling, with bystanders often unwilling to intervene when abuses occur.

He further stated that South Africans are supposed to reciprocate the support they received from other African countries during their struggle for independence, rather than treat fellow Africans with hostility.

He added that South Africans in Ghana and other African countries have associations, and should begin demonstrating against their compatriots to show that such behavior is unacceptable.
