The flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has raised concerns over what he describes as a growing threat to democratic freedoms and free expression in Ghana, warning that recent political developments risk undermining the country’s democratic gains.

In a strongly worded statement issued on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr. Bawumia argued that Ghana’s democratic space is facing increasing strain amid what he claims are targeted arrests and intimidation of opposition figures and supporters.

He said the pattern of arrests, detentions, and bail conditions being imposed on members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) reflects a troubling shift in the country’s political environment.

Dr. Bawumia pointed to the arrest and release of NPP supporter David Essandoh, who was reportedly detained over social media comments about the return of “dumsor,” as well as the remand of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, as examples of what he believes is an escalating clampdown on dissent.

According to him, these incidents are not isolated but form part of a broader trend that risks weakening citizens’ confidence in the justice system and democratic institutions.

He further alleged that elements within the executive arm of government, state investigative agencies, and sections of the judiciary are working in ways that could intimidate political opponents and restrict free expression.

Dr. Bawumia warned that such developments, if left unchecked, could have long-term consequences for Ghana’s democratic stability.“These actions undermine free speech and are setting Ghana’s democracy backwards,” he stated.

He also cautioned state officials involved in what he described as politically motivated actions, insisting that accountability would eventually follow.

“I therefore serve notice to officers of the State who are active participants in this unholy enterprise that the day of accountability will come and the abuse of state power will be accounted for,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia urged party supporters to remain steadfast and continue exercising their democratic rights, stressing that political power is temporary and must not be used to silence opposing voices.
