The Deputy Minister for Health, Prof. Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah, has pledged the ministry’s committment to reduce maternal mortality by 20% by the end of 2026.

She made the promised during a working visit to the Awutu Senya East Municipal Health Directorate under Phase 3 of the Maternal Mortality Action and Response Programme (MMARP).

At the Kasoa Mother and Child Hospital, the Deputy Minister led the presentation of critical equipment, including a digital X-ray machine, an ultrasound scanner, delivery beds, and other essential items.

Dr Grace Ayensu-Danquah revealed that maternal mortality remains Ghana’s only worsening health indicator, with over 950 deaths recorded last year despite increased access to skilled care.

A nationwide action plan, she noted, will focus on early detection at the primary healthcare level, improved referrals, and better-equipped facilities.

The minister also announced plans to deploy additional doctors, midwives, and support staff to strengthen service delivery at the high-volume facility.

She also paid a working visit to the Kasoa Polyclinic where she engaged health workers on frontline challenges, stressing the urgent need to address referral delays and maternal emergencies.

Dr. Grace Ayensu-Danquah underscored the importance of compassionate care and staff welfare, while calling for practical input from healthcare workers to inform interventions.

The visit she said forms part of intensified government efforts to reduce preventable maternal deaths and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes nationwide.
