Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced a controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam after levels rose above the maximum operating level of 48 feet.
According to a statement issued by GWL, management said all spill gates of the dam are being opened to safeguard the dam’s structural integrity and safety.
GWL explained that it undertakes controlled spilling operations during the rainy season whenever water levels exceed 45 feet to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert potential disaster.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency has forecast further torrential rains upstream, which will increase inflows into the dam area.
As a result, the spilling exercise will continue until the water level recedes to a safe operating level, a process GWL warned may last for months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes.
Management has strongly advised all persons living along the river downstream of the dam to evacuate from vulnerable areas immediately to protect lives and property.
GWL added that the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and District Assemblies plan to clear structures and obstructions that hinder the free flow of water into the sea, and urged authorities to act quickly to minimize flooding risks in affected communities.
Ghana Water Ltd said it remains committed to safeguarding the dam while ensuring public safety, and urged the public to comply with all emergency directives from state institutions.
