The Ministry of Education has launched a nationwide Behavioural Change Communication (BCC) Campaign to tackle the growing menace of drug abuse in schools across Ghana.
The campaign, announced on Saturday, June 27, 2026, is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC).
According to a statement signed by the press secretary to the Minister, Hashmin Mohammed, the initiative forms part of government’s proactive response to protect learners from substance abuse and promote safe, healthy, and disciplined learning environments.
As part of the rollout, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) to introduce a daily anti-drug awareness message in all pre-tertiary schools nationwide with immediate effect.
From now on, students will recite the approved campaign message during morning assemblies, immediately after the National Anthem and before the National Pledge.
The campaign message reads:
Leader: “Don’t start it as a greeting.”
Students: “To live in regret.”
The Ministry said the directive is a key component of a broader Behavioural Change Communication Strategy designed to discourage drug use among school-aged children, strengthen preventive education, and encourage responsible decision-making.
The campaign will be backed by sustained public education efforts, school-based sensitisation programmes, stakeholder engagement, and stronger collaboration among schools, parents, community leaders, and other partners.
“The Ministry of Education remains committed to safeguarding the wellbeing and future of every learner and calls on all stakeholders to support this national effort to eliminate drug abuse from Ghana’s schools and educational institutions,” the statement said.
