Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has dismissed as “false and misleading” a video circulating on social media claiming that a burst Ghana Water pipeline inside an overflowing sewage chamber is contaminating the company’s potable water supply.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 13, 2026, GWL said the claims have no factual or technical basis and urged the public to disregard the video.
“GWL wishes to state unequivocally that these claims are false, misleading, and without any factual or technical basis,” the statement said.
According to the company, engineers and technical experts were immediately deployed to inspect the site after the video went viral. Their assessment confirmed that the pipeline shown is not a Ghana Water Ltd pipeline, but a trunk sewer inlet pipeline designed to convey wastewater into the sewage chamber as part of the sewerage system.
The investigation further established that there is no Ghana Water pipeline within the sewage chamber, and no burst, damaged, or exposed GWL pipeline at the location.
“Consequently, the allegation that sewage is entering Ghana Water’s distribution system is entirely unfounded,” GWL stated.
The company assured the public that its potable water infrastructure is completely separate from sewerage systems and is designed to prevent any interaction between drinking water and wastewater.
GWL added that water supplied by the company undergoes rigorous treatment, continuous operational monitoring, and routine laboratory testing to ensure compliance with the Ghana Standards Authority’s drinking water quality standards.
The Company therefore urged the public to rely only on verified information from Ghana Water Ltd’s official communication channels.
