Flood prevention requires sustainable sanitation measures – George Krobea Asante

Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), George Krobea Asante, has called for a comprehensive approach to addressing Ghana’s sanitation challenges, stressing that the issue requires “short, medium, and long-term solutions.”

Speaking on Angel FM’s ‘Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ’ on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, he explained that desilting gutters, sweeping streets, and other sanitation exercises are not permanent solutions to flooding.

He said that such activities should be part of citizens’ daily responsibilities rather than “occasional interventions.”

Mr. Asante maintained that the NPP is not opposed to the nationwide sanitation campaign, but emphasized that “Ghanaians should not have to wait for the President to instruct them before cleaning their surroundings.”

Commenting on the government’s allocation of GH¢350 million for flood mitigation, he argued that the amount is insufficient to construct drains, gutters, or undertake other capital-intensive infrastructure projects.

According to him, the allocation alone cannot significantly address the country’s flooding challenges.

He also criticized the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), saying “it lacks comprehensive data on the number of flood victims. He argued that the absence of reliable data makes it difficult to accurately assess the impact of flooding and plan appropriate interventions.”
