Wontumi campaign questions NPP leadership over annulment of Ashanti constituency elections

The Wontumi Campaign Secretariat has defended Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, over the swearing-in of some newly elected constituency executives, describing claims that he acted in defiance of party authority as inaccurate.

In a statement, the Secretariat said the elections were conducted under the party’s approved framework with the Electoral Commission and supervised by Constituency Elections Committees that included representatives appointed by both the National and Regional Steering Committees.

It noted that in the absence of any directive setting aside the results, Chairman Wontumi proceeded in good faith to administer the oath to duly elected officers.

“That act was not an attempt to undermine the national party. It was an administrative consequence of an electoral process that had already taken place,” the statement said.

The Campaign is now asking the National Steering Committee to provide the constitutional basis for its decision to annul the elections.

It posed five questions, including under which provision of the NPP Constitution or 2026 Election Regulations the annulment was made, what specific findings were made in each constituency, and whether affected parties were given a hearing before the decision was announced.

The Secretariat emphasized that the questions are about transparency and due process, not defiance.

It added that while the National Steering Committee has supervisory powers, decisions of this magnitude must be backed by clear constitutional authority and procedural fairness.

“The NPP has always been a democratic institution governed by rules. Those values are strengthened when difficult decisions are accompanied by transparency and due process,” the statement read.
