Pupils and teachers at Nyameben D/A Basic School in the Asuogyaman District have marked the school’s 40th anniversary under difficult conditions, with the headmistress appealing for urgent support to fix years of infrastructure gaps affecting teaching and learning.
Speaking during the launch of the anniversary celebrations, Headmistress Fortune Dogbe said the school lacks basic facilities including sanitation facilities, an ICT laboratory, a science laboratory and a teachers’ bungalow.
According to her, the absence of sanitation facilities has forced both students and teachers to use a nearby bush close to the Volta River, a situation she said poses serious health risks.
She called on government, non-governmental organisations and philanthropists to intervene as the school commemorates four decades of service to the Nyameben community.
The anniversary is being used to highlight the school’s history and the challenges that have persisted over the years.
John Elorm Etefe, an old student of the school, speaking on behalf of the old students’ association, also appealed to authorities, NGOs and philanthropists to support the school with the needed infrastructure to improve academic performance.
The 40th anniversary celebrations are themed around addressing the school’s challenges and strengthening education delivery in the area.
