Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has attributed his dismissal from Ghana’s senior national team role partly to what he described as unrealistic expectations from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) leadership.
Addo, who guided Ghana to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, said he still does not fully understand the reasons behind his removal from office, but believes the demands placed on him were exceptionally high.
“I still, to this day, haven’t understood the reason. The expectations from our federation president were simply too high,” Addo said in an interview reported by German publication Fußball.
The former Borussia Dortmund talent coach explained that his two-year spell in charge of the Black Stars involved several disagreements and discussions with the GFA president and board over expectations and team performance.
“Honestly, I still haven’t been given a reason to this day — and honestly, I didn’t ask either,” Addo told 11Fußball.
“I was in Ghana for two years as coach. There was, of course, a lot of back-and-forth between me, our federation president, and the board as well. It just felt like I could have been sacked after just one month,” he added.
Addo’s first tenure as Ghana coach began in 2022 after he replaced Serbian coach Milovan Rajevac, with the mandate of guiding the Black Stars through the World Cup qualification play-offs and the tournament in Qatar.
Under his leadership, Ghana qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup but suffered a group-stage exit after defeats to Portugal and Uruguay and a victory over South Korea. The team’s elimination was sealed after a 2–0 loss to Uruguay in their final group match.
Following Ghana’s World Cup exit, Addo resigned from the role, but later returned as head coach in 2024 with the responsibility of leading the Black Stars’ campaign for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
