The government has launched the National Urban Policy (2026–2035) and the National Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy (2026–2035) as part of efforts to build more inclusive, resilient and sustainable cities and communities.
Speaking during the opening of the Ninth Session of the Ghana Urban Forum on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, on behalf of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the Chief Director, Mr. Amin Abdul Rahaman, said the theme for the policy push is: “Thinking Nationally and Taking Local Action for Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Cities.”
Mr. Abdul Rahaman revealed that the policies seek to address critical urban development challenges, including unplanned settlements, inadequate housing, flooding, congestion, and gaps in infrastructure and essential services.
The launch marks an important step towards strengthening urban planning, improving living conditions in informal settlements, and ensuring that Ghana’s rapid urbanisation becomes a driver of inclusive and sustainable development.
He further urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies, development partners, traditional authorities, the private sector, civil society and communities to translate these frameworks into tangible improvements in the lives of citizens.
The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, stated that recruiting qualified professionals such as architects and engineers is essential to prevent haphazard construction, mitigate flood risks, and avoid urban congestion.
