The Supreme Court has scrapped the delegates system used by political parties to elect their executives and presidential candidates in the country.

The court ordered the adoption of a more inclusive voting system, allowing every registered party member to vote in internal elections. In a 5-2 majority decision, it struck down the delegates system as unconstitutional.

The ruling, delivered on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, upholds a suit filed by three senior politicians – Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, Christine Amoako-Nuamah, and Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe.

They argued that confining voting to a small college of delegates was undemocratic and violated Article 55 of the Constitution, which requires political parties to organise themselves along democratic lines.

By this decision, political parties will be required to develop a new electoral framework that allows all eligible members who meet the membership requirements to participate in parliamentary and presidential primaries.

When implemented, the ruling is expected to have major implications for the country’s two largest political parties, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), both of which have traditionally relied on the delegates system to elect their leaders.
