The Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwabre East, Akwasi Gyamfi Onyina Acheampong, has warned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to desist from what he describes as the rampant arrest and intimidation of members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
He said the current approach by the state agency is unhealthy for Ghana’s democracy and appears targeted at leading figures of the NPP, including former appointees and sitting Members of Parliament.
His reaction follows the arrest and detention of the Manhyia North MP, Baffour Awuah, by EOCO operatives over alleged corruption-related charges.
“EOCO should be extra careful and watch out in their dealings, because power does not last forever. What goes around comes around,” he cautioned.
According to him, while he supports accountability and agrees that no one is above the law, the process must be fair, transparent, and free from political witch-hunting.
He argued that the timing and modus operandi of EOCO raises concerns about a deliberate attempt to harass and silence the opposition.
“We are not saying people should not be held accountable if they have done something wrong. But arresting NPP members almost every week and threatening them is not good for national cohesion. EOCO should act as a professional state institution, not a tool for political persecution,” he added.
He further called on the leadership of the NPP, civil society organisations, and the clergy to speak against what he termed selective justice, warning that it could destabilise the peace the country is currently enjoying.
