The Abontendom Hene of Awukugua in the Akuapem North Municipality of the Eastern Region, Kumakum Sereko Ayerekwa, has called on all natives of Awukugua, both home and abroad, as well as Ghanaians from all tribes, to massively participate in the 2026 Ohum Festival slated for October 24, 2026.
He made the call during a traditional procession to donate food items to feed the ancestors at the Otimo Sacred Shrine in Awukugua ahead of the festival, a sacred rite performed to seek blessings and protection for a successful celebration.
According to him, the festival is open to everyone to come and celebrate and witness the rich and beautiful culture of the people of Awukugua.
He disclosed that the highlight of the celebration will be the rich display of culture where the chief and other sub-chiefs will be carried shoulder-high in palanquins through the principal streets of Awukugua.
The Abontendom Hene further stated that the people of Awukugua insist they will no longer serve under the Akropong Traditional Council, stressing that it is time for Awukugua to have its own paramountcy and manage its own affairs.
He said the demand for autonomy has been long-standing and the people are united in their quest for self-governance as far as their traditional leadership is concerned.
He therefore appealed to all to come together to make the 2026 Ohum Festival historic while pushing for the development and recognition of Awukugua.
