Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has opened up about how fame has cost him his freedom and ability to live a normal life.
In an interview with Ahenfie FM about his upcoming Rapperholic 2026 concert, monitored by Angel Online on Tuesday, October 20, the award-winning rapper said celebrity status has limited some of the everyday activities he once enjoyed.
“It hurts that you cannot pick trotro anymore,” he said, explaining that he can no longer board public transport without worrying about being recognised by fans.
He added that even when he tries, his team has to keep his car on standby in case he is identified.
Sarkodie said the challenge goes beyond transportation, disclosing that fame has also affected his ability to have private conversations, as some people pull out their phones to record him whenever he attempts to engage them.
According to him, such situations require him to be cautious about what he says and how he conducts himself in public.
Despite the challenges, the rapper acknowledged that fame also comes with benefits, particularly freebies and privileges.
“And of course, you have the good side. There are some things you get — freebies,” he stated.
He revealed that he has never bought a phone for himself, citing instances where people have gifted him mobile phones.
“Recently, I tweeted on X that I needed a new phone, and someone bought it for me. My whole life, I’ve never bought a phone before. My last phone was bought by King Promise,” he recounted.
He described the experience as amazing, adding that one must learn to accept both the advantages and disadvantages that come with celebrity status.
