The Interior Minister, Muntaka Mubarak, has disclosed that the interdicted headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School (SHTS), Zakaria Abdulai, has been arrested over his alleged involvement in cases of sexual misconduct involving female students.
He made the disclosure on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when he appeared before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee.
According to Mr Muntaka, the case had been transferred from the Ashanti Regional Police Command to the Police Headquarters in Accra, where it is currently being handled.
He explained that the development followed the matter being brought to his attention on September 7, when a report reached the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He subsequently called for the case to be transferred to the national headquarters.
“It came to my attention on September 7 when the report came to the CID and I insisted that it should be moved from the Region to the national headquarters,” he said.
Touching on the ongoing investigation, the minister said a statement had been taken from Mr Zakaria following his arrest, while steps were being taken to obtain a DNA sample for comparison with semen reportedly found on a dress belonging to one of the alleged victims.
“As we speak, the matter is at the police headquarters being handled. We have been able to get one of the ladies, about semen. We are getting DNA as well.
“What is happening is this gentleman has been arrested, his statement has been taken and he is going through the due process,” he told the committee.
According to the minister, the police needed court authorisation before they could obtain the headmaster’s DNA sample, adding that the process was ongoing.
“To even get his DNA, the law requires that we have to go to court, so the process is on,” he said.
He assured Ghanaians that the allegations would be investigated through the appropriate legal procedures, allowing the headmaster the opportunity to respond to the claims against him.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed the Ashanti Regional Director of Education, Dr William Amankrah Appiah, and the Obuasi East Municipal Director of Education, Mr Kwamena Owusu-Nketiah, to step aside with immediate effect to allow the ongoing investigation.
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, October 20, and signed by the GES Head of Public Relations, Daniel Fenyi.
