The Ministry of Health has announced enhanced surveillance and response measures to prevent the importation of Ebola into Ghana following reported outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kenya and Nigeria.
Kenyan authorities have reported an imported Ebola case and six additional cases linked to the initial infection, including among healthcare workers, while Nigerian authorities also confirmed an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory on October 20, 2026.
However, Ghana has not recorded any Ebola cases according to the ministry.
In a statement, the Ministry said it was strengthening national preparedness through the Ghana Health Service and other partners to ensure “early detection, prompt isolation, and effective management of any suspected case.”
According to the statement, the situation in Kenya poses a significant risk to Ghana due to direct flights between the two countries and higher passenger traffic, while frequent travel between Ghana and Nigeria has heightened concerns following the confirmed case in that country.
“This has necessitated strengthening existing surveillance and screening measures, especially at the airport,” the Ministry stated.
The Ministry adds that the measures being implemented include enhanced screening at points of entry, simulation exercises at the Accra International Airport and the Ghana Infectious Disease Centre, follow-up of travellers arriving from high-risk areas, strengthened laboratory preparedness, and sensitisation of healthcare workers on the management of suspected Ebola cases.
The statement urged the public to remain vigilant and adhere to official health guidance, stressing that “Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of an infected person, or with contaminated materials. It is not airborne.”
The Ministry added that it was working with relevant agencies and partners to protect public health and encouraged the public to “remain calm, stay informed through official communication channels, and cooperate with public health authorities.”
