Afro fusion singer, Gyakie, has defended her decision to be selective about the people she follows on social media, arguing that the attitude of some Ghanaians towards local artistes influences how they perceive public figures.
Speaking on the issue, the singer explained that she was recently criticised in a two-minute video questioning why she does not follow people on social media, particularly when international stars such as Rihanna are known for not following other accounts.
“Someone actually did a two-minute video about me, talking about the fact that, do I think I’m Rihanna? That if it’s Rihanna who is not following anyone, it makes sense, but why do I think I shouldn’t be following anyone? Why do you think that if Rihanna is not following anyone, it is okay?” she said.
Gyakie attributed the criticism to what she described as a lack of appreciation for Ghanaian artistes and public figures by some people in the country.
“It’s because our people here don’t rate our artistes. We don’t rate people we call public figures,” she added.
The Forever hitmaker further explained that she has a strong connection with her fans but cannot follow everyone on social media, given the number of people who follow her.
“There is a bigger connection between my fans and me, and I have 2.1 million people. I can’t be following everybody. If I should follow someone, I can’t be picky about following,” she stated.
Her comments highlight the debate surrounding social media engagement and the expectations placed on celebrities to reciprocate the attention they receive from fans.
