The Tema Regional Police Command has arrested a 52-year-old man, Ibrahim Saani, for allegedly possessing 37 parcels of substances suspected to be Indian hemp at New York, near Airport Junction.
He was arrested on Sunday, October 25, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m. during a police operation based on intelligence.
The police said the team retrieved a bag containing 37 parcels of compressed substances suspected to be Indian hemp and a crusher.
According to a statement issued by the Tema Regional Police Command on Tuesday, October 27, the suspect was subsequently escorted to the police station with the exhibits for further investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect may have been involved in the distribution of suspected narcotic substances within New York and surrounding areas, the police said.
The statement further indicated that intelligence suggested the suspect allegedly feigned madness to conceal his suspected illicit activities.
The suspected substances will be forwarded for forensic examination to establish their nature and assist further investigations into the possible involvement of other persons.
The police said the suspect and any accomplices, if identified, would be arraigned before the court after investigations are completed.
The Tema Regional Police Command has cautioned the public against involvement in narcotics-related activities and urged anyone with credible information on the possession, distribution or trafficking of illicit drugs to report to the nearest police station.
The Command also encouraged the public to continue cooperating with the police to combat drug-related offences and protect communities, particularly the youth.
