A member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) communications team, Aaron Asiedu-Antwi, has emphasised that the party’s position on presidential term limits is consistent with the provisions of the 1992 Constitution.
Speaking on Angel FM’s ‘Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ’ on Thursday, October 29, Mr Asiedu-Antwi said the Constitution represents the sovereign will of the Ghanaian people and clearly establishes a two-term limit for presidents.
“The Constitution is the sovereign will of the people. It embodies the sovereign will of the people. Everyone has agreed the presidential term should be two terms,” he stated.
According to him, the NPP has filed a case on the matter and is prepared to make its position clear if the Supreme Court grants a hearing.
Mr Asiedu-Antwi argued that the country needs a practical and proactive opposition party like the NPP to challenge arguments that could distract the country from the provisions of the Constitution.
He maintained that the NPP’s position reflects what Ghanaians want, insisting that a president who has served two terms should leave office in accordance with the Constitution.
“Our argument is consistent with what Ghanaians want, which is what is in the 1992 Constitution, which is two terms. You spend two terms, you go,” he added.
