Court remands 4 for allegedly stealing EC’s laptops

4 persons arrested over EC’s missing laptops

The four persons who were arrested for allegedly stealing five laptops belonging to the Electoral Commission (EC), have been remanded by the Dansoman Circuit Court.

The four, Benjamin Fianu, Joseph Blankson, Jacob Yeboah and a minor, were arraigned before the Court Monday, April 15, 2024, after months of investigations into the alleged missing devices.

A security officer at the EC as well as a Database Administrator, are among the suspects being prosecuted, Angel News’ Correspondent, Ama Brako Ampofo reported.

They have been charged with conspiracy to steal and stealing and have been remanded into police custody by the presiding judge, Alima Abdul Lawal-Basit.

They will re-appear on April 19, 2024.

The minority in Parliament raised alarm over the missing devices which were intended for voter registration and verification by the Commission ahead of its limited registration exercise.

Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson at a press conference emphasised the need for the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, to promptly locate the missing devices.

Dr. Ato Forson expressed apprehension about the unknown individuals in possession of the devices and the motives behind the theft.

He warned that such a situation could compromise the integrity of the forthcoming elections.

Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy EC Chair in charge of Corporate Services had denied at a press conference that the biometric devices had gone missing.

He, however, claimed that only five laptops were rather missing.

Investigations led to the arrest of the four persons who are now facing the law.
