The Management of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWL) has expressed concern over the growing issue of customer indebtedness, which is having a negative impact on the company’s ability to operate smoothly.

In a press release, the company stated that the outstanding arrears from some customers are causing significant financial strain on its operations, despite its efforts to address the issue.

Ghana Water Company Limited has tried various measures to recover the arrears, such as revenue mobilization exercises, campaigns like “Operation Pay or Get Disconnected,” as well as announcements, advertisements, payment reminders, and offering flexible payment plans. However, the problem persists, hampering the company’s ability to maintain existing systems and infrastructure and to expand its services to unserved and underserved communities.

Ghana Water Company Limited emphasized the importance of timely payment of water bills by customers, as the revenue generated is crucial for sustaining and improving water infrastructure and services across the country. The company aims to collaborate with customers to find feasible solutions, such as implementing flexible payment arrangements for those with substantial debts and facing obvious challenges.

The company also warned customers that it will use all legal means possible to retrieve all arrears. It noted that, payments of bills can be made at any Ghana Water Company Limited office, revenue collection point, or through various digital payment platforms such as the GWCL Customer App, mobile money services, and GWL-partnered banks across the country.

The water distributing company added that customers who fail to fulfil their financial obligations by the end of May 2024 will have their names, including company names and the amount owed, published in national dailies. They will also be subject to legal action to ensure compliance with payment requirements. GWL urges all customers to pay their outstanding bills promptly to avoid any disruptions in service and possible legal consequences.
