A member of the National Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Frederick Kofi Ameyaw, has stated that the fight against illegal mining popularly known as galamsey should not be used as a political tool.

Speaking on the Angel Morning Show (AMS) on October 7, 2024, Ameyaw emphasized that galamsey is not a recent issue, but the NPP has never exploited it for political gain.

He recalled that when President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo took office, one of his first promises was to tackle illegal mining.

“When we decided to fight galamsey, we did not make it a political issue. We have never used illegal mining as a campaign tool in this country,” Ameyaw said.

He also criticized the recent protests against the government’s handling of the galamsey issue, arguing that the demonstrations are politically motivated and partisan.

“Some demonstrators have worn shirts with slogans like ‘thief president,’ and others are attacking and insulting the President. This shows that the protests are partisan. They are not focused on fighting the menace of illegal mining,” he explained.

Ameyaw further condemned the insults directed at the country’s leaders, saying, “Calling the Vice President a liar and the President a fraud—are these protests really about fighting the illegal mining menace, or are they just attacks on the President?
