The National Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Henry Nana Boakye, has stated that the party has no plans to completely ban mining activities in the country.

Speaking on Angel Morning Show (AMS) on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Nana Boakye emphasized that while the party recognizes the importance of mining to Ghana’s economy, especially in regions like Western and Western North, they will not tolerate mining practices that harm rivers and forests.

“If you’re engaged in legal mining, continue with your work, but avoid activities that affect rivers and forests…being a licensed miner does not give anyone the right to exploit natural resources irresponsibly,” Nana Boakye stated.

According to him, mining is the main source of livelihood for over 5 million Ghanaians, making it an essential industry that cannot be entirely banned.

However, he assured that the NPP will intensify efforts to stop illegal mining, particularly where it endangers the environment.

“We can’t ban mining entirely, but we’ll make sure miners follow responsible practices and avoid our rivers and forests,” he added.

Nana Boakye concluded by urging miners to respect Ghana’s natural resources, acknowledging that while mining is a source of income for many, the preservation of rivers and forests is equally critical to the nation’s well-being.
