The Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, John Mahama, has accused the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) government of recklessly using resources meant for cocoa farmers to purchase luxurious cars.
According to Mahama, this attitude by the NPP government has left these cocoa farmers poor.
He said cocoa production has dropped to 400,000 tons, while the government has taken advance payments from foreign entities, leading to a debt of 350,000 tons on the country.
Addressing party supporters as part of his Western Regional campaign tour, the NDC leader further accused the incumbent NPP government of budgeting GH₵ 3.4 billion solely for the headquarters, stating that the government is using the allocated cocoa funds for their own benefit.
He claims they are ‘spending all this money on luxurious cars while leaving cocoa farmers in poverty,’ he said and reported by Angel FM’s Mubarak Yaakubu.
Mr. Mahama who expressed his disappointment over the development, added that due to the lack of incentives for cocoa farmers, much of the cocoa has been left to rot.
Mahama also said that oil production has decreased by 35%, while during the NDC’s tenure, they were producing 170,000 barrels of oil a day.
He alleged that over the past eight years, government officials have consistently resorted to sharing contracts among themselves, which has contributed to the reduction in oil and gas production in the country.
