Former President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, has been declared the winner of the country’s 2024 presidential election.

In an announcement on Tuesday, the Electoral Commission stated that Mr. Mahama secured 6,328,397, representing 56.55% of the votes, defeating the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who garnered 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61%.

“With the singular honour as the returning officer of the 2024 presidential election to declare His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as a winner of the 2024 presidential election and the president-elect of the Republic of Ghana with the total percentage of 56.55%. Congratulations,” said Jean Mensa, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The announcement was made in the presence of representatives from political parties, journalists, and election observers.

According to the EC, the results were accumulated from 267 constituencies out of the 276, with delays in 9 constituencies nationwide, citing the besieging of their offices at the constituency level by party supporters

On Sunday, December 8, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the NPP, conceded defeat to his opponent, John Dramani Mahama.

“I’ve just called He John Dramani Mahama and congratulated him as president-elect. The people of Ghana have spoken, and we respect the final decision,” Dr Bawumia stated in his concession address.

Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his decision to concede was in line with the peace pact signed by both parties before the election to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

“I pledged to ensure a smooth transition,” he added.

In a historic outcome, the NDC also secured a parliamentary majority with 185 seats, further cementing their victory in the 2024 elections.
