The Western Regional Communications Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Kirk Mensah, has alleged that members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are responsible for the destruction of the statue of former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Effia Nkwanta Roundabout in Sekondi-Takoradi.
According to Kirk Mensah, the act of vandalism was orchestrated by elements within the NPP to create chaos and shift blame unto the NDC.
He described it as a politically motivated attempt to tarnish the opposition party’s image in the Western Region.
He also linked the alleged actions to recent comments made by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Sekondi, Lawyer Blay Nyameke Armah who had reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the statue being placed in his constituency.
Kirk Mensah claimed the MP’s remarks might have emboldened the culprits to commit the act.
In a surprising twist, Kirk Mensah acknowledged that there were discussions within his outfit about relocating the statue to Kyebi in the Eastern Region, Nana Akufo-Addo’s hometown.
He explained that this suggestion was driven by the belief that the statue would be more appreciated in Kyebi, as it holds greater sentimental value to the former president’s legacy.
“Relocating the statue to Kyebi was an idea we considered because it is his hometown, and the people there would value it more. However, destroying the statue is unacceptable, and the NPP must answer for this,” he said.
Kirk Mensah also called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, emphasizing the presence of CCTV cameras at the Effia Nkwanta Roundabout. He urged the police to review the footage and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“We expect the police to act swiftly by reviewing the CCTV footage to identify those behind this disgraceful act. The people of Sekondi deserve answers, and the culprits must be punished,” he added.
The statue of Nana Akufo-Addo, erected to honor his contributions to Ghana’s development, has been a subject of controversy since its installation. The NPP are yet to respond to the allegations made by Kirk Mensah.
