President John Dramani Mahama has stressed the need for Ghana to transition from an economy heavily reliant on raw material exports to a value-added industrialized economy, creating jobs, boosting exports, and reducing reliance on imports.

The president made these remarks at the National Economic Dialogue 2025, where he stressed the importance of expanding manufacturing and agroprocessing to maximize the value of Ghana’s natural resources.

“Just recently I think yesterday, the formal chief justice of this country ask for a review of agreement governing our extractive industry. She describes the current agreement as coming from the Guggisberg era, I agree with her.

There must be increased indigenous participation in the exploitation of our natural resources. Ghana must earn more from its natural resource endowment if we are to create salty and prosperity for our people.”

He also echoed the sentiments of the former Chief Justice, who recently called for a review of agreements governing the extractive industry, describing them as outdated and originating from the Guggisberg era.

The president further emphasized the need for increased indigenous participation in the exploitation of Ghana’s natural resources, ensuring the country earns more from its resource endowment to create prosperity for its people.

“It is time to transition to a value added industrialized economy that creates jobs, boost export and reduces out reliance on imports. Manufacturing and agroprocessing must be expanded to ensure that we derive maximum value from our natural resources,” he added.
