Environmentalist Nana Dwumo calls for united front against galamsey fight

Environmentalist Nana Dwumo Sarpong is calling on the general public to form a united front in the fight against illegal mining, known as galamsey in the country.

Mr. Sarpong believes togetherness is one of the key mechanisms needed to support measures aimed at ending the menace.

Speaking to Saddick Adams on Angel TV, he highlighted that the widespread use of harmful chemicals in illegal mining operations is contaminating Ghana’s water bodies, posing serious health and environmental risks to affected communities.

He stressed the need for urgent action to curb the destruction of these natural resources.

Nana Dwumo Sarpong is, therefore, urging traditional leaders, politicians, and all relevant stakeholders to unite in the fight against galamsey to protect the country’s water sources and safeguard public health.

“Chiefs, politicians, and other workers’ groups must come together at a forum to deliberate on the pressing challenges, and that’s the way to go about it.”

He expressed disappointment in the National Minerals Commission for its leadership failure in complementing the fight.

“The Environmental Protection Agency needs to be more proactive in delivering its mandate on this subject. And for the National Minerals Commission, it is as if they do not exist because they have refused to organize sensitization exercises to help end these galamsey,” he added.
