President John Dramani Mahama has urged the newly sworn-in Ghana Armed Forces Council to take proactive steps in strengthening the country’s peacekeeping efforts, counterterrorism strategies, and border security.

He emphasized the council’s key role in maintaining national stability and ensuring Ghana remains a leader in regional security.

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Monday 24th March, 2025, President Mahama acknowledged the council, chaired by Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, alongside six members: Edward Omane Boamah, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Mubarak Muhammad Muntaka, Daniel Addo, Fuseini Iddrisu, and Nancy Dakwa Ampofo

The president tasked them with ensuring that Ghana’s military stays at the forefront of peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and cross-border security initiatives.

He noted that Ghana has long been a beacon of peace in West Africa and beyond, with the armed forces playing a key role in regional and international peacekeeping efforts. Working alongside global partners, they have helped restore stability in conflict zones.

He, therefore, urged the council to address security challenges affecting not only Ghana but also the wider world.

Mr. Mahama further stated, “Our commitment to regional security cooperation remains strong, and as a nation, we will continue to strengthen our partnership with regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union, as well as our international allies, to collectively address security challenges that affect not just Ghana but the entire globe.”

He called on the Armed Forces Council to deepen this engagement and ensure Ghana’s military remains a leader in peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and cross-border security initiatives.

“We will continue to support training exchanges, intelligence sharing, and joint operations that enhance our ability to respond to global security threats,” he added.
