The Gender-Based Violence Court sitting at the Police Headquarters in Accra has sentenced a 29-year-old fisherman, Nii Baah Afful to one week in prison for physically assaulting his partner.
He assaulted his partner, Francisca Aryee, in an incident that sparked public outrage after going viral on social media.
The incident, which occurred on March 20, 2025, at Korle Gonno, saw the suspect assaulting the victim who was holding their 8-month-old baby following a domestic dispute.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the couple lived together and had two children.
On March 22, 2025, the suspect was arrested by the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Unit and initially remanded by the court. On March 24, he was arraigned before the Court.
Nii Baah Afful, at a hearing in Court on April 9, pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to one week imprisonment in hard labour at Nsawam Maximum Security Prison.
The Greater Accra Police Command urges the public to report all forms of domestic abuse, and victims are encouraged to speak up and seek help through the appropriate legal and support channels
