Appiah-Kubi throws support for suspension of post-retirement contracts

Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akim North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, has strongly supported the government’s decision to suspend post-retirement contracts in the public sector, calling for no debate on the matter.

The government, a few days ago in a press release, announced the suspension of post-retirement contracts in the public sector.

Post-retirement contracts are arrangements in the public sector that allow staff who have reached the retirement age of 60, as stipulated in the Constitution, to continue working for a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years, with the aim of retaining their valuable experience in their respective sectors.

The suspension has generated national debate, with some calling for the complete abolition of the policy, while others are speaking against the decision.

Following this, the former lawmaker, speaking on this week’s edition of Key Issue, a political show on Media General’s TV3 with Alfred Ocansey on April 12, 2025, made his stance on the issue clear.

According to him, the law is specific about the retirement age, and there is no need to offer post-retirement contracts to individuals who have reached the stipulated age.

He noted that politicization has been the main driver behind post-retirement contracts and other practices, which he believes are negatively impacting the country.

“There is no need for us to debate this issue. The law is very clear that you must retire when you are 60. Our major problem is the politicization of everything in Ghana,” he stated.
