The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the Okada Riders Association of Ghana (ORAG) Bright Cudjoe, has revealed that there are approximately 3.6 million motor riders across the country.

During a panel discussion on the Angel Morning Show with Saddick Adams on Friday April 11, 2025, he emphasized that many Ghanaian youths are eager to work, but job opportunities are scarce. He noted that a significant number of young people have sought employment abroad due to the lack of jobs in Ghana.

He noted that, “the Okada business is what we rely on to support ourselves. If there were better job opportunities available, I doubt my mother would even permit me to ride Okada,” he remarked.

Mr. Cudjoe further explained that while he would consider job offers from companies paying between GHC 2,000 and GHC 3,000, such amounts would not meet his needs.

He mentioned that, “I am a professional rider and I earn more than GHC 3,000 from the Okada business.”

He also pointed out that many Okada riders struggle to save money because they tend to spend what they earn daily around GHC 2.5 believing they will make similar amounts the following day. This financial instability poses challenges, particularly when it comes to healthcare.

He expressed that, “this is why when we get injured, we often have to borrow money for hospital visits, which is a significant concern for us, especially the motor riders, so we have to look at that critically.”
